An Excerpt from the course on CPR-BLS For Healthcare Providers
CPR – or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation – is an emergency lifesaving procedure performed when the heart stops beating. Immediate CPR can double or triple chances of survival after cardiac arrest.
CPR Establishes circulation and artificial ventilation in a patient who is not breathing, and has no pulse.
The basic CPR steps for an adult, to be performed by a healthcare professional are:
- Restore circulation by performing a series of 30 chest compressions to circulate the blood.
- Opening the airway through using either the head tilt chin lift or jaw-thrust maneuver. And Then, forcing air into the patient’s lungs by providing rescue breathing with a BVM. Be sure to Administer two breaths to 30 compressions, while visualizing for chest rise.
- And then repeat – 30 chest compressions – then 2 rescue breaths with a BVM or a pocket barrier mask.
In adult victims of cardiac arrest, it is reasonable for rescuers to perform chest compressions at a rate of 100 to 120 per minute. And compressing to a depth of at least 2 inches or 5 cm for an average adult.
